How Cowboys-loving doctor, Bears-loving triplets used friendly rivalry to forge bond

For seven years, they’ve kept the friendly rivalry going.

The Pinon triplets were micro-preemies, born at 25 weeks in Chicago.

The family moved to Fort Worth when the special-needs triplets were eight months old and started seeing Dr. Samson Cantu, a gastroenterologist.

Cantu, a big Dallas Cowboys fan, noticed one of the kids wearing a Chicago Bears shirt during their first visit to Cook Children’s. So Cantu started wearing his own Cowboys’ gear each time the family came for a checkup. And they started wearing Bears gear. It’s a friendly banter, of sorts, that has lasted the past seven years.

The teams play Thursday night at Soldier Field. The game airs on FOX (KDFW/Ch. 4 in DFW), NFL Network and Amazon Prime.

“He took pictures of them holding a Cowboys sign and said, ‘Hey, send that to your dad!’” Liz Pinon said.

The friendly rivalry has been good for both the kids and Dr. Cantu. It helps take what could be a stressful visit for the kids and make it fun.

“It’s a really cool thing for me in that it separates them from other families,” Cantu said. “Every family has its own characteristics.”
