Former NFL All-Pro says Ohio State’s Ryan Day ideal coach for Dallas Cowboys
If Jason Garrett is in his last month coaching the Dallas Cowboys, who will replace him?
Former All-Pro running back Eddie George has someone in mind. George thinks Ohio State coach Ryan Day is the perfect candidate to take over the Cowboys. George, of course, played for the Buckeyes.
“If I were willing to bet, and I may be off base by saying this, but Ryan Day from Ohio State would be an appealing choice for Jerry Jones,” George said on Kevin Harvick’s SiriusXM NASCAR Radio show. “And I don’t mind saying I don’t want him to leave Ohio State. Incredible run. But because he has a NFL background I think they’re having tremendous success because of that, where he’s created an environment where it’s NFL-like.”
Day was the quarterbacks coach for the Philadephia Eagles in 2015 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 before joining Ohio State as a co-offensive coordinator in 2017. He became the first Ohio State coach to win the Big Ten Coach of the Year Award this week.
“He’s still created an environment where you can be yourselves and be free and happy and fun but also have that leadership within the locker room that guys are going to follow the rules and there’s a certain culture that you have to live by, and that’s excellence,” he said. “They hold each other accountable and it’s paying off dividends so far. So I can see Jerry Jones taking a run at Ryan Day because he has and NFL background, he understands how to win. He has a unique offensive mind. He’s extremely smart. Highly intelligent. He’s approachable. I would not be surprised if Jerry Jones goes after somebody like that. I think Ohio State’s the greatest job in the world, but who knows. I think Jerry Jones could do that.”
George said the Cowboys’ job isn’t easy and complimented Garrett’s abilities but acknowledged he’s had a long time to put together a winning team. Garrett took over the Cowboys halfway through the 2010 season.
“I think Jason’s a phenomenal coach. That’s a tough job to have because there’s so many eyes on the star. It’s the richest franchise in the NFL,” he said.
