Dallas Cowboys’ Antwaun Woods arrested, faces drug charge after traffic stop in Frisco

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Antwaun Woods’ had glassy eyes and delayed responses to simple questions Tuesday night during a traffic stop by a Frisco police officer, according to an arrest report.

Frisco Officer Blake Simmons detected a “very strong odor of marijuana” coming from Woods’ vehicle when he stopped it Tuesday night.

Woods was clocked at 77 mph in a 60 mph zone which dropped to a 55 mph zone just minutes before Officer Simmons stopped the Cowboys player, who was driving a 2016 Cadillac Escalade, according to the report released Thursday by Frisco police.

During a search of his vehicle, authorities found two mason jars and a gold cylinder filled with marijuana and several pieces of drug paraphernalia such as a small pan and metal container with residue, according to the report.

Woods was arrested and faces charges of drug possession and tampering with evidence after he was stopped just after 9 pm. Tuesday.

“He was stopped for speeding,” said Frisco police Lt. Jeff Inmon in a Thursday email to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The Frisco officer saw Woods traveling at a high rate of speed on U.S. 380, and changing lanes without using his turn signal.

After some time, Simmons managed to get Woods to stop in the 15,500 block of Dallas Parkway in Frisco, police said.

Simmons wrote on his arrest report that it was obvious that the driver, who was later identified as Antwaun Woods, delayed the stop for a reason.

Once he verified information on Woods and smelled the marijuana, Simmons asked Woods how much marijuana was inside of the vehicle, to which the Cowboy answered, “a little bit.”

Woods consented to a search, stepped out of his vehicle and no drugs were found on him, according to the report.

Woods sat on a curb as Frisco police searched his vehicle and found containers filled with marijuana, according to the arrest report.

“He tried to destroy some marijuana by putting it into a water bottle,” Inmon said.

When Simmons asked Woods why he put the marijuana cigarette in the bottle, Woods said he was trying to do the right thing, according to the arrest report.

Frisco police also found small white pills in a backpack and a console, according to the report. Woods told police the pills were Vitamin D.

Woods faces charges of possession of marijuana and tampering with evidence. He was also cited for possession of paraphernalia, Frisco police said Thursday morning in an email. The tampering charge is a felony.

He faces a charge of possession of marijuana over two ounces, but less than four ounces, according to Frisco police. That charge is a Class A misdemeanor.

The Cowboys (6-6) are scheduled to play the Chicago Bears (6-6) at 7:20 p.m. Thursday at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Woods will miss his second straight game because of a sprained knee. It will be the fifth game he has missed this season because of injury.

Reserve defensive lineman Chris Covington is starting in his place at nose tackle.

Now there is a chance Woods might not play again this season as he navigates these charges.

Woods is subject to punishment by the NFL under the league’s personal conduct policy.

Woods is the second Cowboys player to be arrested for possession of marijuana in the past two months. Defensive tackle Daniel Ross was arrested in November on charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Ross has been on injured reserve all season following shoulder surgery.
