Cowboys-Saints get highest Thursday night rating ever. Might Dallas get flexed again?
It wasn’t the high-powered scoring fest of the Monday Night Football matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs.
But the Dallas Cowboys’ stunning 13-10 victory against the New Orleans Saints was must-see television Thursday night and attracted the eyes of millions in record numbers.
According to John Ourand of The Sports Business Journal, the game got an overnight rating of 14.6, which is the highest overnight rating in the history of Thursday Night Football.
It was mostly a so-called boring defensive battle that included nine sacks, three turnovers and a season-low in points for the Saints, the league’s highest scoring team, which was held 27 points below their average.
That spoke to the drawing power of the Cowboys (7-5) going against a now 10-2 Saints team that many considered the best in the NFL, who saw a 10-game winning streak come to an end.
That the Cowboys took control early and held on to win the game, with most expecting the Saints to launch a comeback at some point, likely keeping eyes glued to the television.
This was the final scheduled prime-time game of the season for the Cowboys. But look for them possibly to get flexed to Sunday night again, most likely the season finale against the New York Giants.
The Dec. 16 game against the Indianapolis Colts will likely be moved from noon to 3 p.m. with the FOX Sports’ top broadcast team of Troy Aikman and Joe Buck doing the game.
