Ex-Cowboys, Week 5: Hitchens, Scandrick pull up Chiefs’ D, Bailey seals Vikes’ win
It’s an odd-numbered week in the NFL, which meant that the Cowboys were due for another loss.
This time, the defeat came at the hands of the Houston Texans in overtime.
Head coach Jason Garrett and quarterback Dak Prescott, as well as the team’s receivers, could not get things going on offense, even though linebackers Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch, as well as the defense played well against the Texans’ offense.
But several former members of the Cowboys had strong performances during Week 5 of the NFL season.
1. Anthony Hitchens, linebacker, Kansas City Chiefs
Considering how well the Cowboys starting linebacking corps is playing, the decision to move on from Hitchens might’ve been the right call. But the linebacker led the Chiefs’ defense in tackles again on Sunday and is quietly putting together a Pro Bowl-caliber season.
2. Orlando Scandrick, cornerback, Kansas City Chiefs
Dallas saved cap dollars by parting ways with Scandrick, too. But after being cut by the Redskins, the veteran continues to prove he is a starting-caliber NFL cornerback on a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
3. Ryan Switzer, wide receiver, Pittsburgh Steelers
This one might sting a little bit more. Switzer’s numbers were nothing to write home about during his team’s blowout win over the Falcons on Sunday. But thus far, his production in Pittsburgh proves that he can succeed, albeit in a limited role, in the receiving and kick return game.
4. Dan Bailey, kicker, Minnesota Vikings
Bailey was made three of his five field goals Sunday. But he did account for his team’s final six points in a massive 23-21 road win over the Eagles.
5. Alfred Morris, running back, San Francisco 49ers
Morris wanted another shot to prove he could be at least complimentary lead back. And with Matt Breida dealing with multiple injuries, the former Cowboy is going to get the chance and then some.
