Stephen Jones: Johnny Manziel needs to show NFL teams he’s dependable
More and more signs point toward Johnny Manziel’s NFL career possibly being over.
The former Texas A&M star and Heisman Trophy winner continues to make troubling headlines with the latest coming Tuesday morning in an ESPN report that agent Drew Rosenhaus has dropped him as a client.
It’s the second time Manziel has been dropped by an agent this offseason, and it doesn’t seem that any NFL teams are showing much interest.
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones offered his thoughts during a radio interview on 105.3 The Fan.
“Well, I think it’s all been said about Johnny. He needs to obviously get his hands around what he’s doing off the field and how he can be more functional in terms of being in a spot where a team can account on him or depend on him,” Jones said. “Obviously that’s something he’s got to get his hands around and I’m sure it’s a work in progress for him. We all know when you have that in your life, it can be difficult.
“I’m sure everybody would love to see him get his hands around it so he can come back and be the type of player he was picked to be at Cleveland.”
Cleveland used the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 draft to select Manziel, who had more attention for his off-field antics than his on-field play. The 23-year-old started eight games in two seasons with the Browns, posting a 2-6 record before being cut in March.
Manziel has more issues than just trying to find a job, too. He faces possible domestic violence charges in Dallas County with the case scheduled to be presented Thursday.
Depending on those allegations, Manziel is also subject to suspension by the NFL.
