Any hope of Kyrie Irving returning this season for the Dallas Mavericks is gone.
The team announced Wednesday that the nine-time All-Star will miss the rest of the season as he continues to recover from a left ACL tear suffered last March.
“Irving has made steady progress in rehabilitation and will remain actively engaged with the team through the remainder of the season,” the Mavericks said in a statement.
Irving also provided a statement in the team’s release.
“This decision wasn’t easy, but it’s the right one,” he said. “I am grateful for the Mavericks organization, my teammates and our fans for their continued support throughout the process. I am looking forward to coming back stronger next season. The belief and drive I have inside only grows.
“And I wanted to send a huge shoutout to ALL of my brothers and sisters out there who’ve torn their ACL or gotten injured doing what they love to do every day. THANK YOU for the inspiration. No fear!”
Before the season, there was hope Irving would return at some point to provide a boost for a potential playoff run with Anthony Davis and rookie No. 1 draft pick Cooper Flagg.
However, Davis was traded at the deadline, and the Mavericks have lost nine in a row to fall to 19-35, seven games out of the final play-in postseason berth in the Western Conference.
The Mavericks traded for Irving during the 2022-23 season. He has averaged 25.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists with the team and helped Dallas reach the 2024 NBA Finals.
For his 14-year career, Irving has averaged 23.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists.
