Dallas Mavericks’ Kyrie Irving donates $50K to Tamir Rice Foundation fundraiser
Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving donated $50,000 to a GoFundMe set up to help raise funds for the Tamir Rice Foundation.
The Tamir Rice Foundation was established by Samaria Rice, mother of Tamir, after the murder of her son by Timothy Loehmann, a patrolman with the Cleveland Division of Police, in 2014.
The foundation has purchased a building and is looking to open it as a cultural arts and development center for inner city youth in Cleveland, saying they must invest in and educate their community.
The incident, and the accompanying video, which showed Loehmann shoot Rice within two seconds of opening his passenger door, sparked outrage and protests around the country and was a part of nationwide protests over the use of force by the police, specifically against Black people.
Irving has been a long-standing advocate against racism and police violence, wearing an “I can’t breathe” shirt in honor of Eric Garner in 2014 and supporting the Standing Rock Sioux tribe in their protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Irving, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, also donated $100,000 to the group in 2017.
