Dallas County makes the Dirk Nowitzki celebration official

It’s official: This is the Month of Dirk.

Dallas County Commissioners declared April 2019 as the “Month of Dirk” while passing a resolution honoring Dallas Mavericks’ legend Dirk Nowitzki for becoming the NBA’s s sixth all-time leading scorer.

Nowitzki is likely to retire after the season, his 21st in the league. The Mavericks have three home games remaining, including what could be Nowitzki’s final game in Dallas on April 9 at American Airlines Center. Nowitzki has yet to announce he plans to retire but fans around the league this season have paid tribute to the 40-year-old future Hall of Famer. Mavs owner Mark Cuban says fans won’t want to miss Nowitzki’s home finale.

Nowitzki’s wife Jessica, Mavericks CEO Cynthia Marshall and others were on hand for the proclamation Tuesday morning, according to Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins.

Marshall shared her excitement on Twitter.

“Oh, this was such a special moment and a great way to start my day,” she posted. “Thank you Judge Jenkins and commissioners. And many thanks to Jessica for such a warm and graceful acceptance of the resolution. This was amazing!”
