Projected starting 5 for the Mavs next season has to include Luka Doncic, right?
Where do the Mavericks go from here?
On Tuesday night, Mark Cuban and his front office selected Trae Young with the No. 5 pick in the NBA Draft and promptly traded him and their top five protected first round pick in next year's draft to the Hawks in exchange for Luka Doncic.
The pick has been widely praised because Doncic is a versatile and skilled player. And he's just 19 years old.
And even though he's almost certainly going to be in Rick Carlisle's starting lineup, it's a little bit unclear which position he'll play.
Counting only the currently players under contract, here is the team's projected starting lineup for next season:
Point guard: Dennis Smith Jr.
He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team after his first season. The North Carolina State product also finished second on the team in scoring with 15 points per game.
Shooting guard: Luka Doncic
His natural position is a bit of a mystery. But he can shoot and handles the ball like a guard despite being 6-foot-8.
Small forward: Harrison Barnes
The team's leading scorer this past season. The arrival of Doncic and the continued ascendance of Smith Jr. should ease the defensive pressure on Barnes.
Forward: Dirk Nowitzki
He might elect to see fewer minutes this season. And who could blame him at age 40?
Forward: Maximilian Kleber
He showed some promise down the stretch last season. But the likely arrival of a free agent big man could bump Kleber out by this time next month.
