Although the guard position appears crowded, particularly with Yogi Ferrell, rookie Dennis Smith Jr. and a host of veterans in the fold, the Dallas Mavericks signed free agent guard Maalik Wayns, the team announced Wednesday.

The Mavericks have been busy building their training camp roster in recent weeks. They can take as many as 20 players to camp but the roster must be trimmed to 15 for the regular season.

The 6-foot-2 Wayns has played two seasons and 29 career games in the league with stints in Philadelphia and with the Los Angeles Clippers. He last played in the NBA during the 2013-14 season.

Since then he played in the NBA Development League, in Lithuania, Russia and Italy before going to Israel last season.

He was the starting point guard for Maccabi Rishon LeZion last season where he averaged 15.1 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.4 rebounds.

Wayns left Villanova after his junior season but was not selected in the 2012 NBA Draft.
