Gomez’s grand slam sends Rangers to sweep of Mariners
Carlos Gomez hit a grand slam off of Felix Hernandez in a five-run fourth inning Wednesday, and Martin Perez worked six scoreless innings as the Texas Rangers completed a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners with a 14-1 victory.
Rougned Odor hit two home runs and drove in five runs as the Rangers swatted five homers. Adrian Beltre added a two-run homer in the fifth, and Ryan Rua hit a solo homer in the eighth.
Gomez also walked, stole second base and scored the Rangers’ first run, in the third. Elvis Andrus drove in the first run in the Rangers’ big inning with a bases-loaded single with one out.
Hitting: The Rangers worked over Felix Hernandez for six runs in four innings and hit five home runs in the game, but they didn’t score until the third. ... Carlos Gomez walked to start the third, stole second base, went to third on a sacrifice bunt my Robinson Chirinos and scored on a grounder by Nomar Mazara. ... Carlos Gomez singled to open the fourth, and Adrian Beltre followed with a walk. Mitch Moreland walked two batters later ahead of Elvis Andrus, to singled to left field to drive in Beltran. ... Gomez was next, and he sent a towering homer into the left-field seats for his third career grand slam. ... Beltre connected for a two-run shot in the fifth. Career homer No. 438 moved him into a tie with Andre Dawson for 43rd all time and moved him past Willie McCovey on the all-time RBI list with 1,556. ... Rougned Odor hit home runs in the seventh, a two-run shot, and eighth, a three-run shot. Ryan Rua hit a solo homer in the eighth.
Pitching: Martin Perez didn’t have a single 1-2-3 innings, but he pitched out of trouble twice early and again in his final two innings to improve to 8-2 at Globe Life Park. ... The Mariners had two singles in the second and third but didn’t score, and they had a runner at third with one out in the fifth but couldn’t push a run across. Martin struck out Ketel Marte for the second out of the fifth to keep Guillermo Heredia at third. ... Seattle had a walk and a single with one out in the sixth and loaded the bases with two outs, but again failed to make a dent against Perez. Seattle was 0 for 8 with runners ins scoring position against Perez, who threw 105 pitches. ... Tony Barnette allowed a solo homer to Kyle Seager in the eighth to end the bid for a shutout.
