Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager is headed to the 10-day injured list with lower back inflammation.
This is not the first time the slugger has missed time with back injuries; he missed 19 games in May and early June with the same injury.
The injury comes as the Rangers are playing perhaps their best baseball of the season, the team has won six games in a row and eight of the last 10.
The Rangers’ offense is among the top 10 in runs, batting average and home runs over the past 15 days, a marked departure from the team’s previous struggles at the plate.
Josh Smith was called up from triple A Round Rock after being optioned by the team on June 19. While with the Roughriders Smith hit .235 with one home run and five RBIs in eight games.
The trip to the injured list will be Seager’s third this season and his firsts since being knocked out with a concussion from June 12-24. He has missed 31 games due to injury this season.
Seager has struggled at the plate this season, hitting .182 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs. If his batting average were to hold it would be the lowest of the two-time World Series MVP’s career.
Similar to Seager, Smith struggled this season before being optioned hitting .218 (22-for-101) with six RBIs with three runs scored.
The Rangers hope Smith will be able to bounce back in his return to the majors.
