Texas Rangers manager: “We were upset,” at having two umpires at start of game
Only two umpires will be present for the start of the Texas Rangers vs San Diego Padres game at Globe Life Field because of weather and travel issues in Dallas-Fort Worth on Friday.
Both teams will receive one additional replay review challenge as a result. More umpires are expected to join the game as they arrive.
One umpire will be behind home plate with the other being on the first-base line. The first pitch went off at 7:08 p.m.
The Rangers were looking to get back into the win column after losing five of their last six and getting swept by the Twins earlier in the week. It is Jacob deGrom bobble head night in the ballpark for the Rangers.
The change quickly affected players. In the top of the first inning, Rangers catcher Elias Diaz pointed at first base for a check swing appeal when deGrom was pitching against Xander Bogaerts thinking there would be a first-base umpire, but the umpire was in the middle of the diamond.
Diaz would lose the appeal and Bogaerts would eventually walk, loading the bases which would lead to a Ty France grand slam, the first ever given up by deGrom in his career.
The home run would give the Padres a 5-0 lead headed into the bottom of the first.
Rangers manager Skip Schumaker talked about this moment, which led to the ejection of bench coach Luis Urueta in the middle of the first inning, post-game saying the team wasn’t happy.
“I think we’re all pretty upset about that and again, it’s I don’t know if he saw it, if he was in a different position. That’s why I’m trying to figure out what happened with the two of them. I know the weather and everything, but that’s that’s tough. It’s a big moment in the game, and so, yeah, we were upset,” said Schumaker.
The full crew arrived by the bottom of the first inning.
Despite trailing 5-0 after the first inning following the controversial call, the Rangers would storm back and win the game 9-7 in the series opener.
