But he said he felt right knee discomfort that limited him from going back out for the sixth inning.
“I feel OK now,” deGrom said after the game. “My right leg, just my knee, just felt a little funny throwing, and it kind of stayed the same throughout the game. Gave ‘em heads up and said I’m fine to go. Let’s just see how long I can go. And then after the fifth, we were contemplating the sixth. I said,’ Hey, I can do it,’ and we just decided that, let’s just make sure it’s fine.”
After the team’s 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, manager Skip Schumaker gave an update on deGrom’s knee after he had an MRI and it came back clean. On Wednesday, before the Rangers’ series finale against the Mariners, he laid out the plan for the pitcher’s next start, tentatively planned for Sunday at the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“I saw him this morning. [He] feels good. ... He’s gonna play catch and everything today still on the same program. I wouldn’t think he’s going to miss his start,” Schumaker said.
DeGrom explained how he pitched through what he described as tenderness.
“I felt it a little bit, but it made me like, stay under control tonight. So I was trying not to do too much. I didn’t want to aggravate it anymore. So moving around now I feel OK. It’s a little tender, but I think we’ll be OK,” said deGrom.
DeGrom has had an extensive injury history during his career, including multiple Tommy John surgeries, the last of which came in 2023 and caused him to miss all but three starts the following season.
DeGrom a two-time Cy Young Award winner, also has had surgery on his ulnar nerve in his elbow and missed time due to forearm tightness, among other maladies.
After making his 250th start on Monday, deGrom talked about being thankful for every start he made and acknowledged his injury history.
“Try not to think about it too much. Just try to be ready to go out there and put us in a position to win,” said deGrom, “Any day you’re able to put this uniform on, I said this before, you got to be thankful for that. I missed plenty of time in my career, and thankful to make 30 starts last year, and the goal is to do it again this year and in the next couple years.”
The Rangers let out a sigh of relief, as losing deGrom would’ve been a serious blow to the rotation as the team hopes he will be able to repeat last year’s 30-start performance, his most since 2019.
