Texas Rangers acquire relief pitcher José Ruiz in trade with Atlanta Braves

The Rangers announced Thursday that they have traded right-handed pitcher Dane Dunning for right-hander José Ruiz of the Atlanta Braves and cash considerations.

Ruiz in 2025 has spent time in both Triple A and the major leagues with the Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies. In 16 appearances for the Phillies, Ruiz had a 12.88 ERA in 16 starts with the Phillies from March through May before being designated for assignment on June 1. In two starts with the Braves in June, Ruiz allowed three runs and three walks in two innings before being DFA’d again on June 20.

Dunning compiled a 3.38 ERA in five starts for the Rangers this season, allowing four earned runs and five walks while striking out 10 in 10.2 innings. Dunning has also started 11 games with Triple-A Round Rock this season. In five seasons with the Rangers, Dunning went 26-32 with a 4.36 ERA in 122 appearances.

Ruiz will report to Triple-A Round Rock. The Rangers’ second half begins at home against the Detroit Tigers on Friday, July 18 at 7:05 p.m.
