Texas Rangers take shortstop from Great Oak in first round of MLB Draft

The Texas Rangers selected Gavin Fien out of Great Oaks High School with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.

Fien was the first high schooler selected by the Rangers since they picked Cole Winn with the 15th pick of the 2018 draft.

Like Winn, Fien hails from Temecula, Calif., where he hit .358 with five home runs, 16 RBI, 24 runs scored and eight stolen bases while finishing the season with more walks (11) than strikeouts (9) for Great Oak high school

Fien was a member of the 2024 USA Baseball 18U National Team, which went undefeated and won a gold medal in the World Cup qualifier.

The Rangers had two more picks on the first day of the MLB Draft, taking pitcher AJ Russell out of Tennessee in the second round and combination pitcher/infielder Josh Owens out of Providence Academy in the third round.
