How did Jacob deGrom perform in his first rehab start for the Frisco Roughriders?
Texas Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom took the next step in his return to the big leagues when he pitched in his first rehab start of 2024 for the Frisco Roughriders on Thursday.
Degrom threw 29 pitches in two innings, allowing one run off two hits with three strikeouts against the San Antonio Missions.
After the game, the former Cy Young Award winner discussed the importance of his first rehab start and how he felt post-game.
“Having a game setting, you go through live BPs that’s one thing, but game setting, getting out there feeling good, so that was the most important thing” said deGrom, “Felt really good, still a work in progress,” said deGrom, “Left a couple of fastballs up, but slider was good, changeup was good like I said it’s always a work in progress.”
Degrom was focused on working on his slider, change up and fastball and once again reiterated why he wanted to get back to the majors this season.
“With looking at the short window I have, I’m gonna try and get my top three pitches to where I need them to be,” said deGrom, “It’s very important, that way I can treat the offseason a little more normal... I feel like if I don’t get out there it’s gonna feel like I been rehabbing... for almost a year and a half.”
Degrom isn’t sure how many rehab starts he’ll need before he’s ready to return or how much his pitch count will increase by his next start but said he’s taking everything one step at a time while listening to his body.
