Gov. Greg Abbott gets to hold the Texas Rangers’ World Series trophy

The Texas Rangers were recognized at the Capitol in Austin on Thursday for their decisive 2023 World Series win.

Gov. Greg Abbott held the coveted trophy as he was joined by managing partner and majority owner Ray Davis, pitcher Jon Gray, second-baseman Justin Foscue and other members of the franchise, along with announcer Dave Raymond.

They briefly posed for photos with the governor.

The Rangers in November defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 5 of the World Series, winning 5-0 and clinching the championship for the first time in the franchise’s history.

A proclamation signed by Abbott on Thursday congratulates the team.

“Your historic postseason capped an extraordinary year filled with thrilling home runs, breathtaking catches, and exciting plays,” it reads. “For more than a half century, the Rangers have inspired devotion among fans in Texas and beyond, and this win solidifies your place in the upper echelon of professional baseball.”

The Rangers historic victory was a cause for celebration across North Texas in late 2022, when the team was welcomed home by hundreds of thousands of people with a parade. Words of praise made it all the way to Washington D.C. when U.S. Rep. Roger Williams, a Willow Park Republican, cheered the World Series victory from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Needless to say, this is a historic moment for Texas and Arlington,” Williams said at the time.

The Rangers set a new record for most consecutive wins away from home when they won 11 games back-to-back while on the road.

“Players and fans alike will cherish this triumph for years to come, and as you bask in your victory, know that Texas celebrates with you,” Abbott’s proclamation reads.
