Texas Rangers starter Max Scherzer exits Game 3 of the World Series with injury
Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer was removed in the fourth inning of Game 3 of the World Series with a back injury.
Scherzer was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the second inning when a hit ball bounced off his right pitching elbow. It is unknown if that play caused his back to tighten.
FOX Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal said during the network’s live broadcast that, “Scherzer was near tears headed to the clubhouse..”
Scherzer had been pitching well before his removal, giving up zero runs on two hits with one strikeout in three innings.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy had said before Monday’s game that he would no longer describe Scherzer as rehabbing from injury and that the pitcher would get a longer leash during the game.
This was not the first injury Scherzer has suffered this season as the pitcher came back from injury during the American League Championship Series. He was in danger of missing the remainder of the season with a teres major muscle in his right shoulder.
Scherzer was sidelined by an arm injury on Sept. 12.
He returned to the mound to start Game 3 of the ALCS against the Houston Astros. Hen then decided the series-deciding Game 7 against Houston, pitching 2.2 innings.
Jon Gray came on in relief of Scherzer and was sensational out of the bullpen giving up zero runs in three innings with three strikeouts and earning the win.
After the game Rangers manager Bruce Bochy provided an update on Scherzer saying the team would know more tomorrow.
“Max took a pretty good shot on the elbow that’s what we were concerned about It was his low back that tightened up on him he just couldn’t go anymore,” said Bochy, “We’ll see where he’s at in the next 24 hours and decide where we’re at with him.”
