Why did Christian Walker blow through his coach’s stop sign in the World Series?

The Arizona Diamondbacks made a critical baserunning error in the second inning of their World Series game against the Texas Rangers on Monday at Chase Field.

Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker was on second base with no outs when Tommy Pham hit a single. Walker ran through third base coach Tony Perezchica’s stop sign and was thrown out at the plate by Adolis Garcia.

Walker ran through the stop sign because Perezchica initially waved him home but when Perezchica changed course Walker was looking down at the ground while running and couldn’t see the stop sign.

The mistake was a huge momentum shift against the Diamondbacks because they otherwise would’ve had runners on first and third base with no outs. Instead, the Rangers were able to escape the inning without giving up any runs.
