Maligned for most of the regular season, the Texas Rangers bullpen held firm in the 6-5 extra-inning win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday at Globe Life Field.

After Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi gave up five runs in 4.2 innings, five Rangers relievers combined for 6.1 scoreless innings, which manager Bruce Bochy credited for giving the team the opportunity to come back in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie the game and win it in the 11th.

“I can’t say enough about those guys. They rose to the occasion” Bochy said.

Rangers shortstop Corey Seager tied the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of ninth, and superstar right fielder Adolis “El Bombi” Garcia hit the game winning home run in the bottom of the 11th.

The Rangers bullpen was ranked last in the MLB in saves in the regular season only converting 30 of 63 save opportunities.

The parade of relievers started with Dane Dunning (one hit in one inning), followed by Cody Bradford (no hits in one scoreless inning), Jon Gray (one hit in 1.2 innings) and Will Smith (no hits in .2 inning).

Closer Jose Leclerc then entered the game in the 10th inning and pitched two scoreless innings to gain the win.

The five relievers did not allow a walk and struck out six. Leclerc struck out four in his two innings.

The Rangers and Diamondbacks will play game 2 of the World Series Saturday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington.
