Jordan Montgomery will get the Game 2 World Series start for the Rangers
When the Texas Rangers traded for Jordan Montgomery in July, it was their hope that the left-handed pitcher would play a key role in a possible postseason run.
And that’s exactly what’s transpired.
Texas Rangers pitcher Jordan Montgomery said he’s ready to take the mound in Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday.
After Texas beat Arizona 6-5 in 11 ininng on Friday night, the Rangers will look to go up 2-0 in the best-of-seven series.
Rangers game 1 starter Nathan Eovaldi went four and two thirds innings giving up 5 runs on six hits, a walk and striking out the Diamondbacks’ hitters eight times. Eovaldi’s eight strike outs set a Rangers World Series record.
Montgomery’s been one of the Rangers’ best starting pitchers this postseason, leading the team with a 2.16 earned run average.
He’ll face a young Diamondbacks team that’s made a name for itself being aggressive on the base paths. They’ve led all teams in the postseason with an average of 1.6 steals per game.
Speaking at a press conference before Game 1 on Friday at Globe Life Field, Montgomery said he’ll have to mix up his pitch timing to keep Arizona’s base runners off balance,
“Hopefully I can pick off a couple guys,” he said.
Montgomery started in Game 1 of both the Wild Card and American League Championship series, but will start Game 2 in the World Series after helping the Rangers close out the Houston Astros in ALCS game 7.
He pitched two and a third shut out innings as part of an 11-4 Rangers victory over their intrastate rivals.
“Coming out of the bullpen when you’re not used to it is tiring, but I’m back on my five-day (routine) and I’m good to go,” said Montgomery, who was acquired by the Rangers from St. Louis at the trade deadline on July 30.
The 30-year-old left-handed pitcher was 4-2 in 11 starts after he was obtained. He was 6-9 with the Cardinals.
