Cole Hamels throwing first bullpen session since going on DL

Rangers left-hander Cole Hamels will throw off a mound Sunday for the first time since going on the disabled list May 3 with a right oblique strain.

Hamels, who is expected to be out eight weeks, says his recovery is on schedule.

“We’re kind of where we discussed early on what their expertise and experience is with this injury since I never have had anything like this,” said Hamels, who is 2-0 with a 3.03 ERA in five starts. “I’m just kind of going off them, giving them the right feedback and going accordingly. From my understanding we’re going for what we planned early on and it’s just a matter of making sure we don’t have any setbacks.”

Hamels said throwing his first bullpen will give him a better sense of where he is physically.

“A tell-tale sign with me will be the bullpen just because of the slope and the distance and then manipulating pitches,” he said. “Going from there and reading each day. You kind of build up from that.”
