Fort Worth golfers Stanford, Piller to compete in LPGA Texas Shootout
The LPGA Volunteers of America Texas Shootout will have a new champion this season.
Defending champion Inbee Park will miss this year’s event due to injury, but the field is stacked with talent with 14 of the top 20 money leaders on the LPGA Tour.
The field includes veterans Angela Stanford and Gerina Piller of Fort Worth and rising star Cheyenne Knight, a freshman at the University of Alabama who won two state championships at Aledo.
Piller finished fourth in the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic in Daly City, Calif., over the weekend.
Ha Na Jang, second among this season’s money leaders, is also in the tournament.
The $1.3 million tournament, with a first-place payout of $195,000, will be held Thursday through Sunday at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving. Daily tickets are $25. A weekly ticket is $50. Tuesday’s practice rounds and Wednesday’s Pro-Am are free.
The tournament has a shootout format with two cuts. The first cut to the top 70 and ties comes after Friday’s second round, then the field is cut to the top 50 and ties going into Sunday’s final round.
Knight was one of four golfers granted admission through the high school and college shootout qualifying tournament in March.
