The Charles Schwab Challenge has a new tournament chairman

Jim Whitten has officially taken over as tournament chairman for the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club.

Whitten, who is in the commercial real estate business, has been a member at Colonial for 28 years and is a former club champion. He has served on the tournament committee for years, most recently as the player relations co-chairman.

The tournament chairman serves a three-year term with the possibility of an additional fourth year.

“I am honored to have been asked to lead this great group of volunteers, and I certainly have big shoes to fill,” Whitten said in a news release. “We are so proud to have helped the PGA Tour’s ‘Return to Golf’ last week. This will give us a lot of momentum going into next year. It will be our 75th tournament, so we hope for a big celebration, with all of our fans and hospitality sponsors back with us for a traditional, exciting Colonial experience.”

Whitten takes over for Rob Hood, who served as the tournament chairman from 2017-20.

Colonial is coming off one of its most important tournaments to date, hosting the PGA Tour’s return amid the coronavirus pandemic. The tournament had arguably its best field with the top five players and 16 of the top 20 playing in it, although fans were not allowed to attend.

Daniel Berger emerged as the winner in a playoff over Collin Morikawa.

Next year’s tournament is scheduled for May 24-30.
