FIFA World Cup

World Cup Trophy tour comes to Cotton Bowl this weekend. How can fans attend?

The FIFA World Cup Trophy tour is coming to the Cotton Bowl on Saturday and Sunday in Dallas.

The event is sold out through FIFA’s website, but fans can be notified if tickets become available or show up at Cotton Bowl on a first-come, first-served basis.

The event is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. both days and will include interactive events, games, music and special giveaways.

U.S. Rep Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, talked about what the World Cup could mean for the people and businesses of North Texas, with an estimated $1.5 billion to $2.1 billion economic impact expected.

“I also served on the Super Bowl 45 host committee that was in Arlington in 2011, and where we watched one world-class sporting event, we saw what it could do for our economy, for our visibility and for our regional pride,” she said. “Hotels were full, restaurants were packed. Small businesses thrived, and millions of people saw North Texas in a new light. Now imagine that impact multiplied by nine FIFA matches. This means that visitors from around the globe [will be] filling our cities, supporting our businesses and creating jobs throughout the Metroplex.”

North Texas FWC Organizing Committee executive director Monica Paul spoke about the energy at previous World Cups she has attended.

“I had the opportunity to go to Russia and Qatar, and there is a passion, there is an energy,” she said. “There is people from all over the world coming together, celebrating, even fans there that their team’s not even in it anymore, but they’re just so excited to be there to witness this historic event.”

Two soccer icons — Brazil’s Cafu and France’s Christian Karembeu — attended Friday’s trophy unveiling.

“When we talk about legacy, what we have as a journey as football players, we try to create something, to build something, and I think that it’s part of our experience to ... embrace people with joy, with happiness,” Karembeu said. ”I think that coming to Dallas [not only] to share what you have experienced, but also to share this unique moment, to share this unique opportunity with chances for fun.”

The World Cup is quickly approaching, with the first match of the tournament, between South Africa and Mexico, set for June 11. The first match at AT&T Stadium (known as Dallas Stadium for the World Cup) will be between the Netherlands and Japan on June 14.
