Big first half helps Kennedale run by Fort Worth Carter-Riverside in district opener

Kennedale needed every bit of 48 minutes to win its season opener last week against Sunnyvale.

Thursday night’s game was a far different story.

The Wildcats scored 55 points in the first half and beat Fort Worth Carter-Riverside, 69-0, in their District 6-4A Division I opener at Farrington Field.

The district elected to split into two four-team zones to help modify the season because of the coronavirus pandemic. Kennedale will host FW Eastern Hills at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 while Carter-Riverside will play Dunbar at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 at Clark Stadium. Week 6 matches include Kennedale-Dunbar and Carter-Riverside-Eastern Hills before a zoning seeding game takes place in Week 7.

Kennedale (2-0 overall, 1-0 in district) ended Carter-Riverside’s night early - this after the Eagles (1-1, 0-1) won last week to snap their 27-game losing streak that dated back to the 2017 season.

Texas commit J.D. Coffey, who’s the No. 1 senior safety in the state, returned a punt 27 yards for Kennedale’s first score. Kenaj Washington scored on a 1-yard run, Cameron Lyles scored on a 9-yard run and quarterback Jeremiah Myers threw a 9-yard TD pass to Zach Thetford to give the Wildcats a 27-0 lead after the opening quarter.

A minute into the second quarter, Kennedale extended the lead to 34-0 on an 11-yard TD run by Tyler Choice. Lyles added his second score of the night from 19 yards to give the Wildcats a 41-point lead with 8:40 left in the half.

Braden Waters picked off a Carter-Riverside pass and returned it for a 15-yard TD and a 3-yard run by Jerree Mills sent Kennedale into intermission with a 55-0 advantage.

Aaron Wood scored from the 4 midway through the third quarter. Josh Bunnitt scored from the 6 in the fourth.

Kennedale rushed 32 times for 262 yards and averaged 8.2 per carry. Lyles led the Wildcats with 76 yards on five carries with two TDs. Mills added 73 yards on a team-high 11 carries. Defensively, Julius Perez (2) and R.J. Pepper recovered fumbles for Kennedale, who held Carter-Riverside to minus-61 yards of total offense.
