FW Carter-Riverside snaps losing streak during season opener vs. Atlas Homeschool
Fort Worth Carter-Riverside quarterback Marvelle Jacobs’ first game of the season was a good one.
Jacobs ran for two scores and threw for another as the Eagles defeated Crowley Atlas Homeschool 34-8 in a non-district game on Friday night at Farrington Field to snap a 27-game losing streak that dates back to the 2017 season.
It’s also the first win for new head coach Philip Murray, who came over from Richardson Pearce in April, replacing Jim Jeffries, who spent 16 years with the program.
The Eagles (1-0) were led in rushing by Jacobs, who carried five times for 144 yards. Jacobs also threw for 90 yards. Carter-Riverside finished the game with 271 yards offense on 37 plays (7.3 yards per play).
Things went well early for the Eagles as they landed on the Rattlers with both claws.
The Eagles scored on four of its first five possessions in the first quarter.
Adalberto Arriaga opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown after the Rattlers were stopped on fourth down at their 49.
Jacobs added the next two scores with the first coming on a 44-yard run to put Carter-Riverside up 14-0. The Eagles went up 21-0 when Jacobs broke free for a 75-yard score on the first play of the drive.
On the final play of the first quarter, Jacob hit Zackary Cooper for an 18-yard score and a 28-0 lead.
Both teams struggled in the second quarter until Miguel Esparza intercepted a pass and returned it 21 yards for a score with 53 seconds left before halftime.
Atlas’ lone score came late in the game when backup quarterback Kevionta Rolland hit Noah Harrison for a 50-yard TD. The Rattlers (1-1) tallied 168 yards passing while using four quarterbacks on the night. Rolland completed 3 of 5 passes for 67 yards. Harrison led Atlas in receiving with five catches for 99 yards.
The Eagles defense stifled the Rattlers’ running game, limiting them to 67 yards on 40 carries (1.6 yards per attempt).
Carter-Riverside returns to action Thursday against Kennedale in its District 6-4A Division I opener at Farrington Field while Atlas plays Friday at Lake Country Christian.
