Top-ranked Brock runs over Bushland, gains over 600 yards in football season opener
Brock running back Cash Jones didn’t miss a beat from his all-state season in 2019 as the senior rushed for 241 yards and four touchdowns, and the Eagles routed Bushland, 55-7, at Iowa Park on Friday night.
Jones, who rushed for over 2,600 yards and 35 TDs last fall, led the charge as Brock ran for 414 yards. The Eagles gained 659 yards of total offense on 54 plays (12.2 yards per play).
“I’m really proud of the effort our kids gave against Bushland. We made some early season mistakes, but all of them are correctable,” Brock coach Chad Worrell said. “Kids played with intensity and we were physical on both sides of the ball. We laid a good foundation to build on and now we will go to work improving for next week.”
Brock (1-0), which is ranked No. 1 in Dave Campbell’s 3A Division 1 state rankings, scored six TDs before Bushland finally got on the board. The Eagles scored three times in the first quarter on Jones’ 20-yard TD run, a 2-yard run from Chris Palfreeman and a 1-yard run from Jaxon Gleaton.
Gleaton had an efficient night at quarterback, completing 7 of 8 passes for 233 yards and two TDs. Gleaton and Palfreeman hooked up for TDs of 73 yards (in the second quarter) and 59 yards (in the third quarter). The latter made it 42-0 with 10:30 left in the frame.
Bushland (0-1) scored on a 18-yard pass from Coleman Junell to Leaford Calder with 9:46 left in the third, but Jones added TD runs of 28 and 91 yards as Brock added to its lead just over three minutes later.
Jones, who only carried the ball 11 times, also scored from 54 yards early in the second quarter. Palfreeman made three catches for 161 yards and Myles Semas added nine carries for 65 yards.
Brock will have its home opener on Sept. 4 against Nevada Community.
