Mansfield community raises $200,000 for family of late football coach Daniel Maberry
Over the past three months, more than $210,000 was raised for late Mansfield football coach Daniel Maberry, members of the community announced during a benefit at The LOT Downtown in Mansfield on May 23.
A few people, including Maberry’s wife, Cami, and two daughters were in attendance. Due to the novel coronavirus and social distancing, the event was seen via livestream on Facebook.
“I’ll never be able to tell you how much my girls and I appreciate the way you guys take care of us,” said Cami Maberry at the benefit. “The last 2 1/2 years, you’ve always been by our side. We live in a great community with a great coaching staff. We love you guys.”
Maberry died on Feb. 4 at the age of 47 following his two-year battle with cancer. He was hired as a teacher in the Mansfield school district 20 years ago and became an assistant football coach in 2002. In 2016, he became Mansfield’s head coach and won back-to-back district titles in his first two seasons.
During the past few months, money was raised through donations, auction items, fundraisers and raffle tickets. More than $30,000 was raised in the final week.
A lucky winner was drawn and that person, who wishes to be unnamed, has a choice at a $40,000 car at Mortiz Chevrolet in Fort Worth or a $30,000 credit card.
The rest of the money — roughly $175,000 — is going toward paying off the Maberry home mortgage.
“Thank you everyone that bought a ticket,” said Marty Melton, a member of the Mansfield Booster Club. “The support we’ve had selling tickets and donations done throughout the community has been incredible.”
More than $14,000 was raised through the silent auction, which included a round of golf, restaurant gift cards, a Joe Theismann signed football, a night at the Omni Hotel and an all inclusive trip to The Club Barbados Resort and Spa.
The community also raised over $35,000 during three barbecue fundraisers, hosted by Jim and Natasha Angel. A third fundraiser was held in February, shortly after Maberry’s passing.
“Even with the odds against us, we had a great showing,” Jim Angel said. “It just shows that we are Mansfield and how strong this community is.”
