Community aims to pay off Maberry mortgage with online raffle; local BBQ being held

The Mansfield community continues to honor late football coach Daniel Maberry.

Maberry, 47, died on Feb. 4 after a two-year fight with cancer. A memorial service was held on Monday with the Mansfield Performing Arts Center nearly at full capacity.

Now the town is doing more to help the Maberry family.

An online raffle is open at Maberrystrong.com until April 25. The big celebration and drawing will be hosted by The LOT Downtown in Historic Downtown Mansfield. The event will also have multiple giveways and prizes.

The Grand Prize is a $40,000 voucher to Moritz Chevrolet-Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep. The winner also has the option for a $30,000 credit card. The fundraiser aims to pay off the Maberry’s home mortgage.

A third barbecue fundraiser is also being held in Mansfield on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2034 Cannon Dr. If not sold out, the fundraiser will also go on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You can get a pound of brisket, a half-pound of sausage and four rolls for $20. Raffle tickets will also be sold on site. Tickets are $100 each, or 6 for $500.

Maberry was beloved in the Mansfield community.

He started working at Mansfield High as an assistant football and track coach when the current campus opened in 2002. He became head football coach in 2016. Before moving to Mansfield High, he coached at Worley Middle School.

During his initial diagnosis of Stage 4 lymphoma in January 2018, the community raised over $83,000 in five months through a Go Fund Me account. They hosted two barbecues, raising $6,000 in February 2018 and over $10,000 in June.
