Marcus QB Garrett Nussmeier, son of Dallas Cowboys assistant coach, commits to LSU
Flower Mound Marcus 4-star 2021 quarterback Garrett Nussmeier announced his commitment to LSU via Twitter on Monday.
He holds 30 offers, including 26 from a Power Five school. TCU, Texas, Baylor and Georgia were among those offers.
LSU, which was Nussmeier’s first offer in the summer of 2018, won the national championship in January over Clemson, 42-25.
“This has been an amazing experience and I am extremely grateful,” Nussmeier said in a tweet. “Lastly, I would like to say that I am so excited to get to work in Baton Rouge.
“I will be graduating early and enrolling for the spring semester of 2021. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to play in Death Valley, the home of the best atmosphere and greatest fans in all of college football.”
Garrett’s father is Doug Nussmeier, the quarterbacks coach for the Dallas Cowboys. He moved to the position after coaching the tight ends for the past two seasons until Jon Kitna was let go and later hired at Burleson High School.
After a successful career at Idaho, Doug was selected in the fourth round of the 1994 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints. He also played for the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts.
Doug coached at the collegiate level, which has included stops at Michigan State, Michigan, Florida and Alabama, where he help the Crimson Tide become national champions following the 2012 season.
“We are grateful and excited for the opportunity he has,” Doug said. “For him to go to LSU and play for the defending champions is a special opportunity. He put in the hard work on and off the field, and we are thankful for all the great coaches he had through his youth and high school years.
“We appreciate all the great people in the Marcus community. His coaches, his teammates, his teachers and all those who helped make him into the player and person he is today.”
Garrett is ranked as the No. 7 pro-style quarterback in the country and No. 15 overall prospect in the state, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
He is the top-ranked 2021 pro-style QB in Texas. He is the third best QB in the state behind dual threat QBs Jalen Milroe of Katy Tompkins and Dallas Parish’s Preston Stone.
Nussmeier was voted District 6-6A MVP in 2019 after he led Marcus to an 11-2 record, 7-0 district title and trip to the regional round. He threw for 3,788 yards and 38 touchdowns.
