National champion LSU Tigers among top 6 schools for local all-state 4-star safety
Four-star safety J.D. Coffey has been one of the top Texas high school football players ever since he stepped foot on the gridiron as a freshman at Kennedale.
Three seasons and more than 30 scholarship offers later, Coffey announced his top six schools on Tuesday via Twitter.
Texas, Baylor, Washington, Oregon, Michigan and national champion LSU made the cut.
Coffey, who is ranked as the No. 7 safety in the nation and No. 1 in Texas by 247Sports, holds 32 offers, including 26 from a Power-Five school.
Through the regular season last year, Coffey made 82 tackles, five for loss, two interceptions and six pass deflections. He picked up two sacks and scored on four touchdown returns.
He was named to the Class 4A all-state first team, his second in three years.
As a freshman during the 2017 season, Coffey was named first team when he made nearly 90 tackles, 11 for loss, one sack and seven interceptions. The Wildcats reached the Class 4A Division 1 state championship that season.
Coffey was first-team all-district in 2018 when he made six interceptions.
Coffey is ranked as the No. 31 overall player in 2021 by 24Sports.
