North Texas lands first two 2021 football commits from Pantego, Eaton defensive ends
Arlington Pantego Christian 2021 defensive end/linebacker Jayden Jones announced his commitment to North Texas via Twitter on Friday. Jones became the first 2021 football commit for UNT until Eaton weak-side defensive end Jayden Gray made his commitment later that day.
He also had offers from ACU, Houston Baptist, UNLV and UT-San Antonio.
“The coaching staff was very personable and very honest,” Jones said. “It really felt like family. I think UNT will be the best place for me to succeed and achieve the goals I’ve set for myself.”
Jones helped Pantego to its best season in 10 years as the Panthers won a district title.
The 3-star prospect made 82 tackles (second on the team) and posted a team-high 21 tackles for loss and 15 sacks. He added five quarterback hurries and two fumble recoveries.
He also recorded a 45-yard TD run and six catches for 103 yards and a TD on offense.
“UNT is a big school which is something I’m looking forward to. It’s very close to home which is what’s important to me. I also love the great UNT fan base and how much support they show,” Jones said. “Coach Litrell, Coach Scott and Coach Bowen laid out a plan that I can’t wait to be apart of.
“I love the coaching staff and how they made it more than just football. My family and I love how academics are first and foremost.”
Jones also played on the basketball team and averaged 16.8 points and 16 rebounds per game.
Gray, also a 3-star prospect, made 54 tackles and eight sacks for the Eagles in 2019.
He also had offers from Virginia Tech, UT-San Antonio, Texas Southern and Army.
“I remember when I was close to being done with the game. I questioned if this was really for me,” Gray said in a tweet. “But my family was there to pick me up at my lowest times and made me the person I am today. With that all being said I would like to verbally commit to the University of North Texas.”
