Former Manvel, Syracuse coach named next football coach at Colleyville Heritage

Former Manvel head coach and Syracuse assistant Kirk Martin was named the next head football coach and boys athletic coordinator at Colleyville Heritage. Grapevine-Colleyville ISD approved the hiring during Monday night’s school board meeting.

Martin spent a dozen years with Manvel, compiling a 108-25 record (0.812 winning percentage). The Mavericks won six district titles and went to the playoffs eight straight seasons.

The Mavs played in two state championship games, including in one of the best Texas finals in 2017 when Highland Park won in the closing seconds, 53-49.

“I am really excited to be a Panther,” Martin said in a press release. “I am fired up to work at such a great school and program. I can’t wait to build relationships with the students, faculty and I feel so blessed to be part of the Pride at Colleyville Heritage.”

Martin replaces Joe Willis, which left for Tyler Lee in January.

Willis went 40-23 with two trips to the state quarterfinals in five seasons with the Panthers.

Martin also had stints at the high school level at El Paso Cathedral, EP Riverside, Alvin, Odessa Permian, Giddings and Alpine. After Manvel, he became quarterbacks coach at Syracuse. The Orange scored a program-record 523 points, finished 11th nationally in points per game and beat West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl during the 2018 season.

“We are so excited to welcome coach Martin as the next head coach for our Panther football program,” said Executive Director of Athletics Bryan Gerlich in the release. “He is a proven coach at both the high school and collegiate level, and we look forward to continuing the winning tradition at Colleyville Heritage High School.”
