Grapevine linebacker Timothy Drysdale scored two touchdowns on a 93-yard fumble return and a 45-yard interception return as the Mustangs (7-1, 4-1 Distict 4-5A, Div. I) ran past Colleyville Heritage (5-3, 3-2) for a playoff-clinching win, 59-20.
The game was played at Dragon Stadium due to ongoing renovations at Mustang-Panther Stadium.
Grapevine jumped out to an early 17-0 lead. Jack Ertz scored the Mustangs’ first touchdown on an 8-yard pass from Cade Rhodes one minute into the second quarter. On the following series, Colleyville Heritage advanced to the Grapevine 7-yard line before Drysdale scooped a fumbled handoff and ran untouched for the score.
Trey Parker kept the Panthers in the game with a 90-yard kickoff return following Drysdale’s score to put Colleyville Heritage on the board. Grapevine took a 24-14 lead into halftime.
Grapevine on its first play from scrimmage of the third quarter when Roshawn Prear dashed for a 53-yard touchdown. The Panthers’ Jacob Fex answered with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Trey Flint with 4:50 left in the third. A failed two-point left Colleyville Heritage trailing 31-20.
Play of the game: Ertz took the kickoff following Fex’s score and ran it back 75 yards for a touchdown to swing momentum back in Grapevine’s favor.
Game was over when: Drysdale’s 45-yard interception for a touchdown pushed Grapevine’s lead to 52-20 with eight minutes left in the game.
Offensive player of the game: Prear finished with 122 yard rushing and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
Defensive player of the game: Drysdale scored twice on long returns to kill any offensive momentum for Colleyville Heritage.
Big picture outlook: With a 4-1 district record, Grapevine clinches a playoff spot and still has an outside chance at winning the district. At 3-2, Colleyville Heritage is still in the running to make the playoffs.
What’s next: Grapevine plays host to Denton Ryan at Southlake’s Dragon Stadium on November 2nd at 7:00 p.m. Colleyville Heritage travels to take on Birdville on November 2nd at the Birdville Fine Arts/Athletics Complex with a 7:00 kickoff.
