Benbrook edges Dunbar behind late rally, running back’s big night
With only 20 seconds left to play in a hard-fought District 6-4A Div. 1 game Friday night at Clark Stadium, Benbrook quarterback William Green threw a 12-yard scoring strike to receiver Trevonne James to cap a furious fourth-quarter comeback in a 29-28 victory for the Bobcats (6-1, 3-0).
Until that TD toss, Benbrook relied on an heroic rushing night from running back Quintan Jackson, who amassed 340 yards on 46 carries.
Dunbar (2-3, 1-1) capitalized on two fumble recoveries for touchdowns to erase an early 10-0 Benbrook lead.
But Jackson and Benbrook refused to go away.
Game was over when: A Hail Mary pass from Dunbar quarterback Le’onte Cooper fell on the turf with no time remaining.
Play of the game: A powerful 2-yard burst on a fourth down by Jackson to keep Benbrook’s final scoring drive alive.
Offensive player of the game: Jackson should be offensive player of the week again with his performance that included a 36-yard TD run and another long touchdown that was called back by a penalty.
Defensive player of the game: Jeremiah Hayes and Arkete Walker of Dunbar each scored on fumble recoveries.
Unsung hero of the game: Green also threw a 34-yard touchdown to Brandon Johnson and overcame wet conditions to direct the Bobcats offense.
Moment of the game: Benbrook’s scoring pass from Green to James in the waning seconds.
