Kennedale clicks in all phases during rout of Western Hills

Kennedale running back Donovan Rubin rushed for 144 yards and three scores as the Wildcats rolled over Fort Worth Western Hills 49-0 in a District 6-4A Division I game Friday night at Scarborough-Handley Field.

Kennedale (4-2, 2-0) scored on each of its five first-half possessions as well as a blocked punt in the first half.

Rubin scored on runs of 20, 1, and 34 yards, the latter gave the Wildcats a 35-0 lead with 4:50 left in the second quarter. The senior carried 11 times in the game.

Western Hills (3-3, 0-2) lost its starting quarterback, Jayvon Simmons, with around three minutes left in the first quarter with what looked to be a right knee injury. The Cougars were down 14-0 at the time and were driving, but the drive stalled after the injury and Western Hills missed on a 49-yard field goal attempt.

The Kennedale defense was relentless, allowing 31 rushing yards on 29 carries and 60 total yards.

Quarterback Evan Jowers was efficient for the Wildcats completing 5 of 7 passes for 105 yards. Jowers threw two TD passes to Carrington Roblow and Jaden Smith from 25 and 27 yards.

Game was over when: When Simmons went down with a knee injury for Western Hills it took almost all its offense out of the game. The Cougars picked up one first down after the injury and had three for the game.

Play of the game: Kennedale’s Ethan Bishop blocked a Western Hills punt with 8:46 left in the half and Chandler Webb fell on it in the end zone for a touchdown for the Wildcats. The play gave Kennedale a 28-0 lead.

Offensive player of the game: Rubin’s 144 yards on 11 carries and three scores led the Wildcats. Wideout Jaden Smith also had a good night with three catches for 62 yards and a 27-yard TD that was just in bounds on the left sideline.

Defensive player of the game: The whole Kennedale defensive unit played wel,l allowing three first downs and 60 yards of offense. J.D. Coffey had an interception for Kennedale that set up the Wildcat’s first score.

Unsung hero of the game: The Kennedale special teams created havoc for Western Hills. The Wildcats blocked two punts that led to two quick scores. The Webb recovery in the end zone and Wayne Landry’s block that gave the Wildcats the ball at the Western Hills 1-yard line.

What’s next? Both teams continue district play next week with Kennedale hosting Lake Worth. Western Hills will travel to River Oaks to face Castleberry. Both games are on Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
