Offensive balance helps Arlington Bowie tip Sam Houston
Against Sam Houston on Thursday night, Arlington Bowie puts its offensive balance on full display.
Quarterback Malcom Mays passed for 219 yards and three touchdowns and running back D’Aunte Prevost rushed for 132 yards and two scores as the Vols raced past Arlington Sam Houston 34-8 in a District 4-6A game at Wilemon Field.
Mays threw touchdown passes of 4 and 63 yards to Zaliek Freeman in the first half as Bowie (4-1, 2-0) built a 21-8 halftime lead.
Mays, who completed 15 of 19 passes, capped off his big night with a 3-yard TD pass to Jimmy Valsin in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
Prevost was equally instrumental in leading Bowie’s offensive charge. He scored on a 2-yard run to put Bowie up 7-0 midway through the first quarter. It was the first of three consecutive scoring drives for the Vols in the opening quarter.
Prevost carried 15 times on the evening. His final rush was a 19-yard scoring run that made it 34-8 with 6:17 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Sam Houston (1-4, 1-1) scored its lone touchdown when Exzavier Thomas ran in untouched from 7 yards out early in the second quarter. The Texans committed committed 18 penalties on the night for 130 yards.
Game was over when: Mays connected with Freeman in stride for a 63-yard touchdown in the final minute of the first quarter. It wasn’t technically over yet. But Bowie’s going up by three scores proved too much of a deficit for the Texans to overcome.
Play of the game: Sounds like a broken record, but Mays’ 63-yard TD pass over the middle to Freeman was a thing of beauty. It was right on the money, allowing Freeman to blaze down field without slowing down to haul in the pass.
Offensive player of the game: Mays completed 79 percent of his passes and tossed three touchdown passes. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Defensive player of the game: Bowie defensive lineman Robert Franklin blocked a Sam Houston punt in the first quarter, setting up a short drive for a touchdown by the Vols offense.
Unsung hero of the game: Not to be outdone by Mays and Prevost, Freeman hauled in six receptions for 116 and two touchdowns.
What’s next? Sam Houston hosts Arlington Martin at Wilemon Field at 7 p.m. Oct. 11. Bowie faces Arlington at Maverick Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
