West ties Arlington city record for TD catches in a game in Lamar win over Martin
Lamar (4-0, 1-0 in District 4-6A) scored touchdowns on five of six first half possessions to rout crosstown rival Martin, 52-11, in a district opener and matchup of unbeaten and winless teams Friday night at Cravens Field.
Jordan Williams rushed for 177 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown for the Vikings. He also caught one for a score. Jack Dawson was 16-23-0 for 252 yards and five touchdowns. Four went to Trevon West for a school record. West had the first and last two touchdowns. Alejandro Garcia was good on all seven of his point-after-touchdowns and a 34-yard field goal.
Lamar took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in nine plays with a seven-yard pass from Dawson to West accounting for the first score.
After forcing a three-and-out, the Vikings moved 82 yards in eight plays with another throw to West from Dawson for 11 yards and a 14-0 lead with 3:34 left in the first quarter.
Game was over when: Martin (0-4, 0-1) consumed much of the third quarter with an opening drive that covered 44 yards in 13 plays and ended with a 36-yard field goal by Nick Rodriguez. It made the score, 35-11. But Lamar replied with a 46-yard touchdown pass just 31 seconds later to West from Dawson on a post route. It was a two-play, 70-yard drive for a 42-11 lead with 3:16 left in the third quarter.
Play of the game: Lamar scored a pair of touchdowns in rapid succession when Blayne Dwyer recovered a short kickoff early in the second quarter at the Martin 31 yard line. Two plays later, Williams hauled in a 28-yard pass from Dawson to compliment Williams’ six-yard run for the previous touchdown. The two scores came only 16 seconds apart and gave Lamar a 28-0 lead.
Offensive player of the game: West’s four touchdown grabs not only broke a school record but tied an Arlington citywide record as well.
Defensive player of the game: Eric Williams, Kylan Thompson, and several other linemen sacked Zach Mundell three times in the second half to kill promising drives by the Warriors.
Unsung hero of the game: Though Mundell was only 4-15-1 for 38 yards passing in his defense the statistics are misleading. Many of his throws, particularily in the early going, were on target but dropped.
Also, the Warriors scored an unlikely touchdown as time expired in the first half. At first it appeared Martin was about to attempt a field goal but then quickly changed formation. Sawyer Evans then took the snap and lobbed to an open Morice Blackwell in the end zone for a touchdown from 19 yards out. The Warriors were rewarded on a 16-play, 80-yard drive and converted two fourth downs on the drive including the touchdown on fourth-and-seven to salvage the loss.
What’s next? Lamar faces Trimble Tech at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Scarborough-Handley Field. Martin hosts North Crowley at 7:30 p.m., Friday, at Maverick Stadium in Arlington.
