North Side used a strong running game to push the Steers to a 60-17 win over Fort Worth Carter-Riverside at Farrington Field on Thursday.

Steers quarterback Isaak Rosales led the attack, rushing for 163 yards and a score. He was complemented by running back Juan Salgado, who hit the 100-yard mark when he scored his second TD late in the first half. He finished with 130 yards and the two scores.

The North Side(2-3, 1-0 District 5-4A) outgained the Eagles 328-81 yards in the first half. Fifty-three of those yards for Carter-Riverside came on a run by Marvelle Jacobs.

The Jacobs run took the Eagles to the Steers’ 12-yard line where the drive ended on a muffed field goal attempt.

Demetric Johnson was able to put the Eagles on the board with a 2-yard plunge in the second quarter.

The Steers took a 35-7 lead into the halftime locker room.

Adarius Jennings led the Eagles with 145 yards rushing and an electric 70-yard scoring run.

Game was over when: After North Side’s Victor Reyes picked off a pass and returned it 18 yards for a score and pushed the lead to 50-7, Carter Riverside’s Adarius Jennings took off on a 70-yard scoring run on first down. Although the outcome was not in question, the run by Jennings took the exclamation point off the Steers’ margin.

Play of the game: Jennings’ weaving run kept the Eagles faithful excited in an otherwise dismal night.

Offensive player of the game: The offensive honors have to be split between Rosales and Salgado for North Side.

Defensive player of the game: Reyes gets the honor for the defense, mostly on the game-sealing pick-six. The entire North Side defense gets an honorable mention, keeping the Eagles to 234 total yards.

Unsung hero of the game: Steers receiver Andrew Anguiano gave a great effort, catching seven passes for 88 yards and a TD.

Moment of the game: Rosales’ scrambles turned into exciting runs much of the night, including his 40-yard run for a score early in the second quarter. That run and score set the tone for the night.

Stat of the Game: Carter-Riverside completed one pass for 13 yards.

Big picture outlook: Winning the first district game of the year is always critical and North Side will leave Farrington Field with even more momentum than when they arrived for their homecoming game. Carter-Riverside, showed grit in the performance, appearing out-manned on shallow roster.

What’s next? Carter-Riverside, (0-5,0-1 Dist. 5-4A) comes back to Farrington Field next Friday to take on Fort Worth Southwest at 7 p.m. North Side (2-3, 1-0) will have a bye and will then host Southwest at Farrington Field on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 7 pm.
