Denton Guyer explodes in third quarter to breeze past Keller Central

Denton Guyer and Keller Central had one win between them in five tries heading into their District 5-6A opener.

It was close at halftime, but Guyer erupted for 21 third-quarter points to keep the Chargers winless in a 34-13 thumping Thursday at Keller ISD Stadium.

With a slim 13-10 lead at the half, Guyer (2-2 overall, 1-0 District 5-6A) pulled away with two Seth Meador touchdown catches, from 6 and 53 yards, off the arm of quarterback Eli Stowers. It was Meador’s second and third scores of the game after a 14-yard scoring run in the first quarter.

Stowers added a TD run late in the third quarter to ice the game.

D.J. Graham had 9 catches for 131 yards for Central (0-4, 0-1) and had the Chargers only touchdown on a pass from Gavyn White.

Game was over when: Central drove 70 yards in 12 plays down to the Guyer eight yard line, but had to settle for a 25-yard Devin Brock field goal to trail 27-13. The Wildcats answered immediately with a 32-yard TD run by Stowers to give Guyer a 34-13 lead with 1:12 left in the third quarter.

Play of the game: Graham, a wide receiver for the Chargers, took a swing pass from White and out raced the entire Guyer defense 77 yards for a Central score. It was the second snap of the game and gave the Chargers a 7-0 lead with 24 ticks off the clock.

Offensive player of the game: Guyer’s Stowers rushed 11 times for 142 yards and a score and threw for 108 yards with two TD passes. The sophomore executed a perfect zone read, darting in from 32 yards out to cap the scoring for Guyer.

Defensive player of the game: The entire Guyer defense played well, led by Kaleel Rhoden and Dotun Olanipekun, allowing 24 rushing yards on 27 carries. William Vuong had an interception for Central.

Unsung hero of the game: Guyer running back Kaedric Cobbs was the work horse for the Wildcats with 184 hard earned yards on 25 carries. Cobbs didn’t score on the night, but kept the chains moving and the clock running.

What’s next? Guyer will travel to Dragon Stadium in Southlake to take on Carroll, No. 8 in the state in the AP Class 6A poll and No. 5 in the Star-Telegram 6A Power Rankings, at 7 p.m. on Oct. 5. Central will host Trophy Club Nelson at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4.
