WEEK 4

1. What we noticed: Rain, rain go away; please come back another day

I hate to bring it up and maybe I’m jinxing TXHSFB because of it, but for the third-straight week, high school football games were affected by mother nature and it doesn’t look pretty for Week 5.

It seemed like DFW had a record rainfall from Friday night through Saturday morning and it was so bad that games were being pushed up to Thursday, only to find out that Thursday was just as wet as Friday. Thursday games were being delayed and canceled too.

By now you may have heard the story, but there was so much rain that homes were being flooded and drivers were having trouble out on the roads, especially one woman in Caddo Mills.

A woman was trapped in her car before Arlington Bowie coach Danny DeArman and a friend broke a window to get her out. The woman was on DeArman’s back as he was walking toward safer ground.

Not all heroes wear capes. Great job coach!

2. Biggest Upset: Springtown 30, Kennedale 0

The Porcupines beat the Class 4A Division I state runner-up for the first time since 1989 at Wildcat Stadium. The game was called with 6:37 remaining due to lightning. Cameron Rickett rushed for 163 yards and scored three total touchdowns.

3. Best Win: Diamond Hill-Jarvis 29, Carter-Riverside 17

In past years, if Diamond Hill was ever in a game during the second half or gave up a lead late, the Eagles may have crumbled. This year’s Eagles passed Friday’s test. Trailing 17-13 in the third quarter, DHJ scored the final 16 points to win the inaugural “Battle of the Eagle” trophy and beat Carter-Riverside for the first time since 2005.

They’re 3-1 this season, their most wins in a season since 2005. Now they begin district on Thursday against Lake Worth and look to win their first district game since 2009.

4. Best Offensive Performance:

QB Jordan Davis (Timberview): The Wolves crushed Dallas Wilson 54-7 to start 1-0 in district play. Davis only completed six passes but five of them were for TDs. He threw for 226 yards and also beat Wilson the ground with 7 carries, 49 yards and 2 TDs. Davis has accounted for 1,036 yards and 14 TDs with one interception.

RB Stacy Sneed (Timberview): Davis’ favorite target was the 3-star 2020 back who has offers from Baylor, Arkansas and Arizona. Sneed finished with three catches, all for TDs (72, 59, 21) and 152 yards receiving. He also ran 7 times for 103 yards.

WR Trey Cleveland (Arlington): The Texas Tech commit couldn’t be stopped in Arlington’s 44-34 win over Mesquite Horn as the Colts start the season 3-0. Cleveland caught TD passes of 68 and 18 yards and finished with 7 catches and 150 yards.

5. Best Defensive Performance: Carson Hallack (Burleson); Jose Hernandez (Castleberry)

Both linebackers recorded 16 tackles in victories over Joshua and Godley. Hallack helped the Elks improve to 4-0 this season and has been a huge reason why opposing offenses have a hard time scoring..

Burleson has given up 28 points and just shy of 500 yards in four games TOTAL; that’s 7.0 points and 120 yards per game.

The Lions improved to 3-1 with a 15-14 win over the Wildcats. Castleberry is off to its best start since 2013.

WEEK 5

1. Can Martin get back to its winning ways? Opponents haven’t stopped scoring on the 0-3 Warriors, who have given up 174 points in three games. They gave up 249 in 13 games last season. But Martin had one of the toughest non-district schedules in the state, having played 6A Div. 1 state runner-up Lake Travis and three of the top recruits in the state in Hebron’s Trejan Bridges and Rockwall’s Jacob Clark and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The Warriors start district at 3-0 Lamar on Friday.

2. Will Keller stop Southlake Carroll? Looking at the schedules to start the season, how many people would have thought this match-up would be between two undefeated teams? The Dragons are the Dragons, and remain in the 6A AP Top-10. Keller is a more surprising 3-0 as the Indians have scored 40 or more points in each game for their best start since 2015. Keller is outscoring opponents 127-22; Carroll at 91-45. This is the first meeting since 2013. Max Preps only goes back to 2004 and Keller has lost the past eight meetings in the series.

3. Best game to watch: Prosper vs. Plano East, 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Eagles and Panthers enter Week 5 both 4-0 and both in our latest Dallas-Fort Worth power rankings. In a district that features state powerhouse Allen, this figures to settle up second place in District 9-6A. Plano East is allowing 10 points per game while Prosper is averaging nearly 50 points per game. It doesn’t get easier for Plano East though, with a match-up at No. 1 Allen in its next game on Oct. 12.

4. The Year of Nolan? The Vikings are one win shy of tying last season’s mark and the defense has been a big reason for the success. The Vikings (4-0) have allowed 23 points through four weeks after going 5-6 in 2017. They’re coming off a win over FW Eastern Hills where they held EHHS to -45 yards of total offense ... yes -45. But it gets tougher for Nolan with Bishop Lynch, Liberty Christian and FW All Saints coming up.

5. Other Fort Worth area games to watch in Week 5: Timber Creek vs. Eaton; Boswell at Brewer; Fossil Ridge vs. Byron Nelson; Legacy vs. Timberview; South Grand Prairie vs. Mansfield; Midlothian vs. Burleson Centennial; Northwest vs. FW Southwest.
