Jase McClellan scored six touchdowns and the Aledo defense forced six turnovers by fumbles as the Bearcats won their District 5-5A Division II opener 63-16 Friday night at Burleson ISD Stadium.
The victory was the 76th consecutive district victory for the Bearcats (3-0 overall), a state record. Aledo last lost a district game in 2007 to Everman. Centennial opened league play with a loss for a third straight year. However, in each of the past two the Spartans advanced to the playoffs, including the second round in 2016.
McClellan had touchdown runs of 8, 34, 8, 4, and 1 yards in the first half as the Bearcats built a 49-16 lead at the intermission. He added a 35-yard touchdown in the third quarter before calling it a night, finishing with 148 yards on 15 carries.
Jake Ford recovered a fumble for a touchdown as Aledo went up 21-0. Collin Johnson recovered two fumbles for the Bearcats, both of which led to McClellan scores.
Centennial’s Chris Mosley led all rushers with 151 yards on eight carries, including a 70-yard touchdown.
Despite the one-sided score, Centennial rushed for 356 yards. The Aledo defense adjusted in the second half after giving up 301 in the first half. The Spartans were held to 15 passing yards.
The Bearcats amassed 499 yards overall, with 394 on the ground.
Game was over when: JoJo Earle, better known for catching the ball, ran 51 yards for a touchdown to put Aledo up 28-7. It came on the first play after Centennial had scored its first touchdown, a 70-yard run by Chris Mosley.
Play of the game: Aledo defensive back Jake Ford recovered a fumble for a touchdown to put the Bearcats up 21-0 with just under five minutes left in the first half. It came on the first play after Centennial had converted a third down. It was also the second consecutive possession on which the Spartans fumbled that led to a Bearcats touchdown.
Offensive player of the game: Aledo’s Jase McClellan. He finished with six touchdowns and rushed for 148 yards on 15 carries. Five of his touchdowns came in the first half.
Defensive player of the game: Aledo defensive back Collin Johnson recovered two fumbles. The first was immediately followed by a 34-yard touchdown run by Jase McClellan for a 14-0 lead. The second he returned 39 yards, and it again led to a McClellan touchdown (8 yards) for a 35-10 lead.
Unsung hero of the game: Centennial running back Chris Mosley, who led all rushers with 151 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown run, on eight carries.
What’s next?: The same team for both the Spartans and Bearcats. Centennial is at Everman, Sept. 21, 7:30 p.m. Aledo is off until Sept. 28, when the Bearcats host Everman, 7:30 p.m.
