Jacob Amador amazes at QB for Burleson in blowout win over Denton Braswell

Burleson closed out non-district play Thursday night with a 44-22 win over Denton Braswell at C.H. Collins Stadium.

Elks senior quarterback Jacob Amador completed 20 of 26 passes for 250 yards and three scores. He also scored on a 40-yard run.

Burleson finished with 415 yards of offense on 61 plays. The Elks ran for 165 yards on 35 carries and threw for 250 yards.

Game was over when: Burleson scored twice in the span of 13 seconds to push an 8-point lead to a 22-point advantage in the fourth quarter. First, Jarrett Austin scored on a 6-yard pass from Jacob Amador. Then Calvin Williams recovered the ball on the ensuing kickoff at the Braswell 2. Two plays, later Austin scored on a two yards run.

Play of the game: Sophomore running back Jarrett Austin’s one-yard run gave the Elks a 14-7 lead with 8:23 to play in the first quarter. The score capped a 17-play, 75-yard drive that took 7:29 seconds off the clock. Amador completed 6 of 7 passes on the march for 47 yards while Caleb Lewis carried six times for 24 yards.

Offensive player of the game: Burleson senior wide receiver Aden Anderson benefited from Amador’s hot passing hand. The senior hauled in six passes for 88 yards, including a 10-yard scoring strike.

Defensive player of the game: A Braswell defensive lineman intercepted a screen pass and returned it 40 yards for a score. The touchdown with 7:32 to play cut Burleson’s lead to 30-22.

Stat of the Game: Austin didn’t touch the ball many times but he made an impact as he scored on a pair of runs and caught a touchdown pass. The sophomore ran the ball three times for three yards and caught three passes for 54 yards.

Big picture outlook: The victory gives the Elks momentum heading into their District 9-5A Division II opener at Waco University next week. The Bengals are now 0-2 and will be seeking their first win next week on the road at Frisco.

What’s next? Burleson plays at Waco University, 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 14. Braswell plays at Frisco, 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 14.
