Cedar Hill flips story, game with dominating second half

A 23-yard field goal late in the game capped a run of 16 consecutive points as Cedar Hill defeated Denton Guyer 23-21 in an area round 6A Division 2 Region 1 playoff game at Mansfield’s Newsom Stadium on Saturday.

Cedar Hill advances to face Mansfield in the regional semifinals next weekend at The Ford Center at the Star in Frisco.

Key players: Cedar Hill quarterback Avery Davis completed 24 of 38 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns, ran for 28 yards and caught a pass for four yards. Guyer running backs Luke Stillwell and Noah Cain combined for 218 rushing yards and three touchdowns, but only 17 combined yards in the second half.

Key stat: After surrendering 238 yards and 21 points in the first half, the Longhorns’ defense came to life in the second half, holding Guyer to 30 yards of offense and stopping the Wildcats’ last-gasp drive with a sack on fourth-and-10 at the Guyer 30.

Records: Denton Guyer 9-3; Cedar Hill 10-2
