Last-second FG lifts Seguin into the playoffs

Osbal Benitez had been given just one field goal attempt all season, but Friday his 34-yard attempt with 4 seconds left hooked inside the uprights to lift Arlington Seguin past Burleson, 17-14, at Wilemon Field. The win lifts the Cougars into the playoffs for the first time since 2013. Burleson’s school-record streak of three consecutive playoff appearances was ended with the loss.

Key players: Vertis Garrett had 145 yards rushing to pace Seguin. Kevion Cox and Evan Lacey, both took snaps at quarterback for the Cougars, and each scored rushing touchdowns. Burleson’s Jaylen Johnson had 131 rushing yards and 98 passing. Justin McMaster had a career-best six receptions.

Key stat: Seguin failed to complete a pass, but averaged 7.2 yards per rush.

Records: Seguin 6-3, 4-2 in 9-5A; Burleson 3-6, 2-4
