Mansfield Timberview all-state point guard chooses Tarleton State over North Texas
Mansfield Timberview senior guard Joey Madimba announced his commitment to Tarleton State via Twitter on Friday.
Madimba also considered North Texas, Alabama-Birmingham, Hofstra and Southern Illinois.
“I’d like to appreciate the recruiting process. It has taught me a lot as a young man. Thank you to all the coaches that saw potential in me from the start all the way until this tough decision,” he said in a tweet.
Madimba averaged 17 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists this season.
He was voted District 5-5A Co-MVP and Texas Association of Basketball Coaches all-state. He was also voted first team all-area by the Star-Telegram.
The Wolves reached the UIL Class 5A state tournament this season.
However, the UIL suspended the tourney, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, just before Timberview was set to play a semifinal game against San Antonio Wagner on March 12, a rematch from last year’s 5A state championship, which the Wolves won.
It was Timberview’s second title in three years.
The UIL ultimately canceled the tourney and the remainder of the spring sports. The UIL announced it will celebrate the rest of the state tournament teams with a virtual presentation, trophy and medals at a date to be determined.
Tarleton State had gone 18-12 and 13-9 in conference play this season. It went 1-1 in the Lone Star Conference tournament before the season was canceled.
TSU hired former Texas A&M, Kentucky and Texas Tech coach Billy Gillispie at the end of March.
