South Grand Prairie assistant named next head boys basketball coach at Keller
Keller ISD named South Grand Prairie assistant Zach Weir as the next head boys basketball coach at Keller High School on Friday. He replaces Randall Durant, who resigned in February amid bullying allegations.
Weir, who spent the past five seasons at SGP, graduated from Waxahachie in 2000. He was a first-team All-District point guard as a senior and also voted team MVP.
“Coach Weir is committed to motivating players and encouraging them to succeed and has been active in assisting student-athletes pursue their goals of playing at the collegiate level,” Keller ISD said in an email.
Weir graduated from Oakland City University in 2005 and has spent the past 12 years as a coach.
The Warriors went 24-10 this season and 9-5 in District 7-6A, according to MaxPreps. They lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs, 68-56 to defending state champ Duncanville on Feb. 24.
SGP has reached the playoffs in 10 straight seasons.
“We know coach Weir is eager to get to know your student-athletes, even in the midst of our current COVID-19 stay-at-home orders,” Keller ISD said. “We firmly believe that coach Weir has the dedication, discipline, enthusiasm and desire to make a positive impact on the lives of our Keller Indians basketball players.”
Keller went 20-14 after losing to Flower Mound, 84-64, in the first round on Feb. 25. Four days before, Durant stepped down from his post after 14 seasons with the Indians.
According to a report on CBS 11, several parents of players in the program raised concerns more than a month ago, alleging severe verbal abuse and bullying by Durant toward his players
Assistant coach Ryan Speaks took over for the remainder of the season.
Durant led the Indians to the program’s first state tournament appearance in 2017. The Indians went to the playoffs 11 times with Durant, including nine-straight seasons from 2010-18.
